A Jigsaw Puzzle Layer Cake of Spatial Data

چکیده
The Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe ( INSPIRE; http:// inspire .jrc .ec . europa .eu) is a European Union (EU) directive that aims to provide a legal framework to share environmental spatial data among public sector organizations across Europe and to facilitate public access to data. To meet these goals, INSPIRE’s organization is analogous to a layer cake in which each layer is composed of interlocking pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The metaphor, although mixed, is apt (see additional supporting information in the online version of this article), and as researchers outside the program, we offer our perspective on how INSPIRE may address challenges raised by the variety of data themes and the wide coverage of collaborators. INSPIRE covers 34 data themes in Earth and environmental science and is implemented by 28 European states. The work is well organized through specifi ed implementation rules. Further, a pilot project, OneGeologyEurope, has provided positive feedback on the use of common data models and vocabularies. Nevertheless, emerging challenges hinder INSPIRE’s full implementation, caused by different interpretations of the guidelines; evolving data themes; differing geospatial information standards; and obstacles within organizational, cultural, and legal frameworks. Other obstacles in data interoperability and data citation, such as the lack of data provenance, data/ service identifi ers that should but do not match across information sets, and poor accessibility for nonspecialists should also be considered to make INSPIRE friendlier to users.

The Effect of Two Teaching Methods on Nursing Students Perception of Psycho-Social Climate of the Classroom: Jigsaw Puzzle Versus Programmed Lecture
Introduction: Cooperative teaching techniques such as jigsaw technique may encompass positive effects in promoting psycho-social climate of learning environments. The aim of this study was to determine nursing students' perception regarding psycho-social environment of the classroom and investigating the effects of two methods of programmed lecture and jigsaw puzzle in promoting students' perce...
متن کاملGesture and Speech Input are Interlocking Pieces: The Development of Children's Jigsaw Puzzle Assembly Ability
Spatial reasoning ability is enhanced by spatial activities and spatial language. Spatial games (e.g., block building, assembling jigsaw puzzles) are often accompanied by spatial language, which, in turn, is often accompanied by co-speech gesture. Here we investigate the effects of spatial language and gesture in the context of puzzle play in improving preschool children’s puzzle assembly abili...
متن کاملVirtual 3D Jigsaw Puzzles: Studying the Effect of Exploring Spatial Relations with Implicit Guidance
This paper investigates the engaging concept of virtual 3D jigsaw puzzles to foster the understanding of spatial relations within technical or biological systems by means of virtual models. Employing an application in anatomy education, it answers the question: How does guided spatial exploration, arising while composing a 3D jigsaw, affect the acquisition of spatial-functional understanding in...
متن کاملWorld of Scientific Puzzle Art Using Layer Manufacturing
Three types of intelligent puzzle, a three-dimensional Escher puzzle (3DES), a 3D jigsaw puzzle (3DJG) and a color matching cubocatahedron puzzle (CUB), are developed by layer manufacturing. Each puzzle contains a common packing problem. Furthermore, there exist two important mechanisms, the rotation of CUB and the translation of 3DJG. 3DES is obtained on the basis of periodic arrangement of ic...
متن کاملRobust Sex Differences in Jigsaw Puzzle Solving—Are Boys Really Better in Most Visuospatial Tasks?
Sex differences are consistently reported in different visuospatial tasks with men usually performing better in mental rotation tests while women are better on tests for memory of object locations. In the present study, we investigated sex differences in solving jigsaw puzzles in children. In total 22 boys and 24 girls were tested using custom build tablet application representing a jigsaw puzz...
